The Alfajores of Argentina

A little look at the country's favorite indulgence
8

If you’ve traveled to pockets of South America, or if you’ve popped into a grocery store in Miami you might have spotted an alfajor. The snack, which you could probably call the cousin of the macaroon, is an indulgent treat, and takes the place of candy bars in grocery store checkouts.

There are dozens, if not hundreds of various alfajor brands in Argentina, though the majority of these brands use the same basic flavor profiles. Two cookies, with dulce de leche sandwiched in between. Sometimes the entire treat is then dipped entirely in chocolate, other times it remains naked.

I’ve picked out a few alfajor options to show you in this week’s video, though I wanted to illustrate two of the rare versions that don’t rely on dulce de leche (and, ironically, are two of my favorite).

Frankly, I think these two would sell exceptionally well in the States. But then again, what do I know?
